Just because this is a compact car, it doesn't mean we've cut corners when it comes to safety. In fact quite the opposite, we've given the i-MiEV many of the safety features our other vehicles have.

Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS)

Let pedestrians know you’re there

Because i-MiEV is almost silent, AVAS creates an audible sound to let pedestrians and cyclists know the vehicle is approaching.

Active Stability Control (ASC)

If you have a wobble, the car won’t

If wheels lose their grip on slippery surfaces or while turning, the ASC system automatically adjusts engine output and applies a braking force at the appropriate wheels to help maintain control and prevent skidding. The Traction Control function applies a braking force to the spinning wheels for smooth starts and straight line acceleration.

Advanced Airbag System (SRS)

Protection for everyone in the car

To keep occupants in every seat safe, the i-MiEV is equipped with six airbags to provide protection from all sides. Front passengers are protected by front and side airbags. Curtain airbags extend along both sides to protect front and rear seat occupants.

ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD)

A brake system for the brake system

Our Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) prevents the wheels locking after braking. As well as ABS, the i-MiEV has Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD). This automatically adjusts the braking based on the car’s speed and load weight to ensure you can stop more quickly and safely.

RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) Body

Designed to protect you

The i-MiEV is built using our advanced Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution body. It strategically places reinforcements at critical points to help route and absorb energy in the event of a high impact collision. So you and your passengers are kept safe when you need it most.

Brake Assist System

Extra braking power if it’s needed

The Brake Assist System is there to help drivers in an emergency stop situation. It provides extra braking force if the brake pedal is depressed suddenly.

High Voltage Control System

Two levels of battery protection

The High Voltage Control System shuts down the battery’s high-voltage circuitry if any leakage or failure is detected. For an additional layer of battery protection (for example in a severe collision where the High Voltage Control System itself is damaged) a G-force sensor will shut the battery down.
